Technology That Helps Older Family Members Stay Home

Aging-in-place technology that helps older family members remain safely at home with remote monitoring and communication.

Most older adults want to stay in their own home as long as possible. Most families want the same thing for them — and spend considerable time worrying about whether it is safe.

GrandCare Systems bridges that gap: health monitoring, communication, activity sensing, and medication reminders in an interface simple enough for someone who has never owned a smartphone. Pure Sight & Sound has worked with GrandCare Systems since their early implementations. Ed Kmetz is recognized by GrandCare as one of their early implementation experts for aging-in-place technology.

What GrandCare Does

For the Person Living at Home A large-screen touchpad that lives in a central location — kitchen, living room, bedroom — displays photos from family, video calls, medication reminders, and daily schedule prompts. It does not require technical knowledge to use. The interface is designed for someone who finds typical consumer devices confusing or frustrating.

There is no app to learn. No password to remember. The touchpad is always on and always ready.

For the Family A secure web portal gives family members remote visibility into activity patterns, health readings, and communication. You can see that your parent took their medication. You can see that someone moved through the kitchen at the usual time this morning. You can send a photo, start a video call, or post a message that appears on their screen immediately.

If something is outside of normal patterns — no movement detected, a scheduled reminder not acknowledged — the system can alert the family.

Health Monitoring (where configured) GrandCare can integrate with wireless health devices — blood pressure cuff, weight scale, pulse oximeter — and log readings against a configured health plan. Readings outside specified ranges trigger alerts to family or care coordinators.

Why This Works for the Poconos

Many families in the Poconos are multigenerational — children building or owning vacation or permanent homes in the area, with older parents nearby or in the same home. The Poconos also has a significant population of retirees living full-time in communities originally built as second-home destinations, sometimes at a distance from their adult children.

GrandCare addresses both situations: it keeps the older person connected to family and provides the family with the reassurance that allows everyone to stop worrying and start living.

How Pure Sight & Sound Installs It

GrandCare is not a plug-and-play consumer product. The configuration — what is monitored, what triggers an alert, what appears on the screen, how the interface is set up for this specific person — requires careful setup. We install the hardware, configure the system for the individual's household and routine, and ensure that every person involved — the older adult, the family coordinator, and any care staff — knows how to use their piece of it.

This mirrors the same standard we hold in every installation: the Grandma Guarantee. Before we leave, the person using the system can use it. That standard is especially meaningful here.
